How to Prepare a 32oz Cup of Fruit Fly Media: Step-by-Step Guide
- Add Media: Empty one packet of fruit fly media into a 32oz cup.
- Add Water: Pour 2/3 cup of hot or boiling water (make sure it’s exactly two-thirds, not 2 or 3 cups) into the cup with the media.
- Stir and Blend: Mix thoroughly until the media is fully blended. The ideal consistency should be the consistency of thick applesauce; if you tap the cup on the counter, the media should flatten out. Add small amounts of water as needed until the right consistency is achieved.
- Cool the Media: Let the media cool down completely (this usually takes about an hour, but placing it in the refrigerator can speed up the process).
- Add Flies: Once cooled, add approximately 50 fruit flies to the cup. For easier handling, add the flies before placing the excelsior. The more flies you add, the bigger the first bloom will be.
- Add Excelsior: Insert a portion of excelsior so that the bottom touches the media, providing floor space and structure for the flies (you can use coffee filters as well if you prefer).
- Seal and Label: Close the cup with the provided lid. Write the date on the label and stick it to the cup for easy tracking.
